- Résumé
- A new edition of The Secret History (also known under the Greek title Anecdota) of AD 6th century Byzantine historian Procopius. Not discovered and published until the 17th century, it is a shocking and revealing first-hand account of the history of the court of the Emperor Justinian, his empress Theodora, and his general Belisarius. Procopius worked as an official in the court of Justinian, authoring the official histories of Justinian's wars, covering Rome's wars with Persia and the Vandals during the mid-6th century, but The Secret History appears to be Procopius's secret private thoughts about what he saw first-hand, recording his increasing disillusionment with the increasingly cruel, venal, and duplicitous ruling class of the Byzantine Empire. This edition is based on the unattributed translation published by the Athenian Society in 1896.Procopius of Caesarea (AD 500 - c. 565) was a prominent late antique Greek scholar, who became the principal Byzantine historian of the 6th century, writing the History of the Wars, the Buildings, and the Secret History, having the opportunity observe first-hand the conduct of the emperor Justinian and his general Belisarius in an official capacity. Scholars often classify Procopius as the last major historian of the ancient Western world. Read more
